Loving Lately // 8.31.17. GLOWY Skin, Beauty Foods & More!

Hi my beauties, and happy Thursday! I love that this Loving Lately post is falling on a Thursday, because back in the day this style of post was always a Thursday thing!

I did them every week for a long time, and these days I do them as often as possible but would love to get back to the every Thurs routine at some point.

Anyway… there is so much to share. The SOUL ON FIRE Podcast just hit 2 million downloads (ahhh!) which is probably the most exciting thing to me ever, because I only released it last November and had pretty much NO expectations as to how it would be received or where it would go.

Now, it’s totally become one of my favorite ways to connect with you guys, and has spurred a SERIOUS spiritual awakening in me, thanks to so many of my guests being top of the line healers, spiritual teachers, mediums, and more.

If you haven’t listened yet, this week’s episode with the amazing Colleen McCann of Style Rituals is an amazing place to start! Colleen is a fashion stylist turned shaman, closet cleanser, intuitive crystal healer, and so much more.

And guess what? I will almost positively be attending Colleen’s shaman school next year in Nashville so…. if you live in TN, hit a sista up and I want to start planning some fun events and workshops while I am there!

So now, let’s dive into Loving Lately!

1. THIS Community! I’ve said it before and I will say it again, but I feel so deeply that you guys are the best, most positive and supportive community out there. I know that a lot of you read a lot of blogs, so the fact that this is one of them really means the world to me. We have the Soul on Fire Podcast Tribe group on Facebook, and every day I am blown away by the ladies (and dudes, occasionally!) sharing their hearts, helping each other out, meeting up and making friends with each other in their diff cities, supporting my events (!!) and so much more! I truly believe that when we share our best selves, authentically and from a deep-rooted genuine place, then that VIBE attracts our tribe. And I am lucky that you guys are mine. <3

2. Speaking of tribes… even beyond this awesome online community, I feel that my circle of people in Los Angeles (and other places that I spend my time like NYC) is growing in such a positive, supportive, spiritual, deep, powerful direction. This year alone I have been connected to so many people I had not met yet in this wellness and spiritual space, from the Elevate the Globe (formerly High Vibe Livin!) girls to Colleen McCann, to Kelsey Patel, to Marissa Lace, to Ashley Neese, to Sheena Mannina (all on the podcast!!), to a deeper connection with my Alo Yoga fam, to more deep rooted connections with friends of mine who are also into kundalini, reiki, crystals, shamanism, and all the good fun stuff that I’ve been obsessed with.

I am not just saying this to talk about ME, but to share with you that when you follow your heart from a place of deep, authentic self then you also will connect with the people who are meant to be in your life and who will continue to set your soul on fire.

3. Events that are totally in line with where my heart and soul is! For a while, I was really overdoing it on the events. I was speaking on a lot of panels, agreeing to hosting all sorts of events everywhere where the pressure to share about said events and fill the space would totally eat away at me and would become a full-time job in itself. And of course there was also the whole teaching my twice – four times weekly yoga classes.

Now, I am really just saying YES to events that 100% serve my soul and feel in total alignment with what I am doing and where I want to go. Last weekend, our #livxtbb5k was a BLAST and it was so much fun teaching yoga alongside my soul sis Sophie Jaffe and collaborating with Brandin as we serendipitously and not even on purpose came up with on our latest TBB Podcast episode together!

I also taught at Alo Yoga on Monday night and the group of people who showed up were all so amazing and made me feel so much like we were all in the right place, where we were meant to be. We had yummy food and drinks from Sweetfin, Lifehouse, and REBBL and we just flowed in the sunset and had a great time. It was epic.

I have a few more fun events coming up before the summer ends so I will keep you guys all very posted! (Also in the FB group!)

4. SKINCARE! People ask me all of the time how I choose to take care of my skin. Not because my skin is perfect (it’s not), but because I am so cognizant of what I put onto my skin and because I am careful about it AND a huge proponent of eating loads of beauty foods (I’ll get to that in a sec) I like to believe y skin radiates from the inside out!

The thing is… skincare is a lifestyle. It’s just as much a part of my wellness routine as eating well, exercising, and sleeping. If you’re not taking care of your body, your skin will SHOW you. For me, that means getting flared up, broken out, bumpy, irritated, or straight up breaking out in full body rashes because I have extremely sensitive skin like that.

(Who is with me on the whole crazy rash thing? Did you see my Insta Story of my bleeding, inflamed armpits the other day?! NOT FUN. That was more of a food allergy thing but still!)

P.S. I feel compelled to say this — ALL skin is so different. Don’t get discouraged if something that works for someone else doesn’t work for you. Taking Care Of Yourself from the INSIDE Out… #GLOW!

Happy Monday and happy SOLAR ECLIPSE DAY, beautiful humans! Where were you today when the solar eclipse took place? I’d love to hear!

I was in a kundalini class, deep in the middle of a crazy visionary meditation, but I’ll get to that because kundalini is way high on my list of learning to take care of myself from the inside out.

Solar Eclipse Energy!

I have been feeling the energy of the solar eclipse super, duper strongly these last few days. Mercury is also in retrograde, which is showing up in my life in various ways… considering I left my debit card at a gas station in Paso Robles (#middleofnowhere on my way back from Santa Cruz this weekend), I got a parking ticket in Santa Monica on Saturday, annnnddd I very much thought I misplaced my wallet today and after scouring my car, purse, and kundalini studio for it… I found it at home on my coffee table. #palmtothefaceemoji

Beyond those silly little retrograde happenings that have so graciously tuned me in to paying more attention, slowing down, and being more careful with my sh*t, the eclipse has also been very powerful for me in very positive ways.

I have been feeling my intuition even stronger than usual lately, and having visions and premonitions of things that have 100% been happening and coming true. People who I knew I would come back into contact with have been showing up in my life, projects I felt I was supposed to be taking on are presenting themselves to me, and people I know I am about to see are showing up in the same place as me right before my eyes.

That will be a blog post in itself (would you guys be interested?) that I am more than excited to share. It has been NUTS. If one of these projects that I envisioned comes to fruition as I think it might, you guys will be the very first to hear.

And even beyond all of that, this eclipse energy has me thinking about how crazy important it is to take care of ourselves from the inside out.

I used to think taking care of myself meant focusing on the outside. “If I look good, if I’m fit and thin, if my skin is clear, if I am happy and smiling… then I’ve got it all. Right? RIGHT?!” <— my old inner monologue.

Now, I’ve realized after years and years of this sort of mentality that true health, true happiness, true magic, comes from within. 100% from within.

Then we do have the chance to have it all. Inner and outer, because when it comes from within then we radiate it to the outside.

So, I’ve compiled my top 5 ways to take care of myself from the inside out. I hope you enjoy!

Top 5 TBB Ways To Nourish Yourself from the Inside Out //

1. Nourish Your SKIN! So this might sound like more of an outer beauty thing, but quite the contrary my angels. Our skin is our largest organ, and what we put onto our skin soaks right into our bodies and affects everything from our bloodstream to our endocrine system. Our skin soaks those bad boys right up!

Right now my faaaavorite way to nourish my skin is through Kopari‘s 100% organic coconut oil products. Have I felt guilty in the past for eating dairy and sugar simultaneously? Absolutely, and THAT was unhealthy. The guilt is unhealthy. Enjoying what we put into our mouths is the whole fun after all, so enjoying what we eat is super important.

I like to practice the 80/20 rule. Meaning, I eat very healthy, clean, whole foods about 80% of the time, and 20% of the time I let myself indulge, I eat treats and eat at yummy restaurants I love with people who make my heart happy. I have found that treating myself this way yields better results in terms of how I approach food, because… I enjoy it, so I am not obsessively wanting more or wanting to restrict.

It’s a win, win. And my insides are happy when I truly listen to want I want and I don’t deprive or on the flip side, overdo it!

3. Ready for this one? KUNDALINI YOGA. Yep, I’m going there. The spiritual route. I think everyone needs some form of meditation in their lives, and since I frequently get asked how I quiet my mind during meditation (yes, it’s hard for me too! Super hard!) and how I got into meditation, I feel compelled to say, loud and clear… KUNDALINI.

Until I tried kundalini yoga, I didn’t think meditation was for me. And now my life has been so greatly enhanced by the practice and by the stillness I am able to feel in my mind, body and soul during and after a class. Kundalini yoga is a technology, so between the chanting, the movements, the kriya sets, and the teachings — it has the capacity to radically shift your life, if you are open to it.

Where I love to go in LA is Nine Treasures Yoga, and I also love my girls Britt and Tara of High Vibe Livin. If you are interested in trying out kundalini, shoot me an email because I am happy to recommend some books. I love the practice so, so much.

4. LED LIGHTS! So, you guys know I have been on the LED light therapy train, by way of my now good friend Heather Parkin of Holistic Light Therapy. Soon I’ll be having her on the podcast to chat all things light therapy and holistic healing so you guys will get the full scoop, but I was hooked from the very second that she told me her sister was able to get off all of her meds from her serious bain + head injury post-skiing accident a few years ago. Light therapy is amazing for everything from inflammation to acne / skin issues to insomnia to headaches to depression to SO MUCH more.

I tried it on my dad this weekend in Santa Cruz for his arthritis (who saw the Insta Story?!) and I wish so much that he lived closer so I could do it on him all the time… but so far he felt a lot of relief and was very relaxed which makes me happy.

I am very into these alternative treatments right now from LED light therapy to acupuncture to reiki…. because look at the state of our world, the state of our food, the state of our healthcare system, on and on… and can’t you just help but think, we have to make a little (BIG) change in the way we do things? Primarily the way we take care of ourselves, so we can radiate our findings from the inside out. Who is with me?

5. SLEEP! I know, I know… it might sound obvious. But who here REALLY gets 8+ hours of sleep per night? I am guessing very few of you. I had so much trouble sleeping for YEARS (actually, my whole life) but lately between the alternative healing methods I have been doing, the CBD oil I have been taking (DEF need to do a whole post on this!!!), and overall just taking way better care of myself and being kinder to myself, I have been sleeping a heck of a lot better.

Our bodies can’t function without sleep. Without enough of it, we get sick, we get rundown, we get irritable, we get depressed. Sleep is key my loves, so make those adjustments you need to so that you can get a nice, restful, rejuvenating night of sleep as often as POSSIBLE. Every night, dare I say it.

The mocking may be a bit understated. How does this company and other equally daffy outfits pull off these highly lucrative health scams?

Mainstream medicine is partly to blame.

Without going into much detail, who would not feel better in the setting above, whether you are at end-stage disease or in remission from a cancer.

When is a supplement an approved drug ? Two pharmaceutical-grade drugs are being market as a drug in Russia and as supplement in the U.S.

In addition to the drug/supplement conundrum there are a multitude of alternative treatments, reiki, vaginal crystals (a la Paltrow), magnetic therapy, essential oils, and accupuncture,

Supplement manufacturers are powerful financially and often take legal steps to protect their products. There is a huge financial at stake. Manufacturers have often attacked research scientists and their peer reviewed article, causing financial personal harm to them personally.

The issues are not polar opposites. Many patients are reticent to tell their allopathic doctor if they take supplements. How to fail at Hospice

Hospice was designed for in home care for end of life care. Medicare reimburses the hospice agency for all care and medications while the patient is at home.

Has treatment improved, or do hospice agencies profit more by discharging prior to dying ?

Some who study aging are concerned that certain hospices are gaming the system. That's a worry of Susan Enguidanos, an associate professor in the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. For example, she says that some hospices may be trying to avoid paying for costly treatments by discharging patients temporarily when they need to go to the hospital.

"Individuals that are going in for these very brief health issues are coming out and then, they're being readmitted to those [same] hospices," says Enguidanos.

That's not a good reason to discharge someone, says John Keyserling, senior vice president for communications and policy at the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the trade association for hospice providers.

"Any association between profit margins and clinical decision making is inappropriate and not something that the hospice community supports," Keyserling says.

That hospice community has nearly doubled in size since 2000. Susan Enguidanos says it's also changed a lot.

"Hospice organizations started as grass root efforts and were largely non-profit for a long time," she says. "Now we've had a huge increase in for-profit hospices." There's a concern, says Enguidanos, that by discharging patients early, some hospices may be "trying to avoid costs that they should be responsible for.

Whatever the short-comings of some hospices may be, Keyserling says that his biggest worry is that people who could be helped by hospice aren't taking advantage of it in time. He says about half of patients die within 17 days of being admitted. And that turns hospice into "crisis care" instead of the comfort care it's intended to be.

The University of Vermont is launching itself into the brave new world of Health 3.0.

Back in the last century (1964) when I matriculated at George Washington University I expected to spend almost 40 hours each week for the next two years studying basic science, then returning to my home and spending another 4-6 hours studying for the next day's marathon lectures. With minor modifications this method has remained until most recently.

The school has begun to phase out lectures in favor of what's known as "active learning" and plans to be done with lectures altogether by 2019.

For students starting medical school, the first year can involve a lot of time in a lecture hall. There are hundreds of terms to master and pages upon pages of notes to take.

But when the new class of medical students begins at the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine next week, a lot of that learning won't take place with a professor at a lectern.

Proponents of the new curriculum state,

"The issue is that there is a lot of evidence that lectures are not the best way to accumulate the skills needed to become a scientist or a physician. We've seen much evidence in the literature, accumulated in the last decade, that shows that when you do a comparison between lectures and other methods of learning — typically called "active learning" methods — that lectures are not as efficient or not as successful in allowing students to accumulate knowledge in the same amount of time."

While several other medical schools have been using PBL or AL(Harvard Medical School) there are some who are reticent.

REQUIRED PBL is terrible. It's a massive waste of time. At least with recorded lectures, I could practice the type of ''active learning'' that was best FOR ME and not be stuck in aggravating, long PBL sessions where each hour yielded very little actual knowledge.

I am old school and like to read textbooks - I managed to do that by reading first, watching lectures on fast speed to make sure it all made sense and follow up by active spaced repetition and practice questions + Q/A study sessions with a close friend. If I was forced to sit in PBL for 4-6 hours/day I would not have had time to learn this way and my education would have suffered. If my medical school ever goes full PBL instead of the 1 hr/week session we have now, I would strongly voice a negative opinion.An

My first two years of medical school had 1-2 Problem based learning modules each month. About a week before the session my school would assign a reading from one of those large 18 pound textbooks that would give us (if we read it) the foundation over the topic to be covered.

We'd then spend an hour applying these foundational concepts to 3 or 4 cases and end with a 20 minute informal lecture on the high points of the material. When organized well I think it's a valuable teaching tool. My team mates were assholes and I hated going because of this. I wouldn't want this to be 100% of my information delivery system, but it added a lot to general didactic lectures.

But your scenario sounds like garbage. Putting students in a situation that they have no foundation in is a waste of everyone's time.

Now adapting to a single model of teaching is dangerous. A university in Japan built their entire campus on the model of PBL, but between they started building and the building was finished they figures out that wasn't the best way to learn.

Then you have TBL, which seem to be a random number of letters.

Now the buzzwords are "flipped classroom" and "active learning". Yes, but is that the best use of the students time or money? I don't know.

There are US medical schools that use the 100% TBL/PBL model. Data shows that the students historically perform above average on boards, but having talked to them in person they make it sound miserable. I was rejected from my #1 choice that was one of these all PBL schools. It was a blessing in disguise.

What the studies I've read say, and what was presented at the last AMEE conference I attended, was that pretty much regardless of whichever pedagogy you elect to follow medical students will learn.

They will pretty much learn the same, and pretty much be as good physicians as those that used other methods.

There are some differences, which indicate PBL and TBL score higher on the USMLE, but at a significant cost in time and money.

It seems a combination of lecture based learning, advanced study and PBL will serve best.No one method is sufficient to educate a physician.
