A Lil Update on the SOS-Free Vegan Life + a Cookie Dough Recipe

Hi guys! Happy Monday.

I hope everyone had a beautiful weekend with friends, fam, loves, fur babies, or some good solo time because that is just as needed from time to time too.

I had the most magical weekend in Sacramento celebrating one of my best friends since kindergarten as she married her forever love, who is truly her PERFECT MATCH (!!!) and we got to celebrate their amazing relationship.

There is nothing like being home, having all of my hometown best friends in town, and getting to share more and more of my Sactown life with Jonathan. So much has changed since we were all in high school almost 10 years ago, but Sac will always be home + my childhood BFFs will always be like sisters.

Truth be told… I was determined to live in the moment this weekend and enjoy myself despite my raging Lyme symptoms, which always flare up even worse than usual when I travel. Between all of the excitement, the lack of sleep, the sips of alcohol I had at the wedding (guys, I was really living my best life), the dancing ANNND the travel (we missed our first flight home yesterday, no big deal) I pretty much started to feel down. for. the count.

I made the decision after being diagnosed that I will never let Lyme get in the way of celebrating these massive, once in a lifetime moments with my closest friends. YES Lyme did get in the way of me attending Eleni (the bride)’s bachelorette party for obvious reasons of what I can’t do (late nights, alcohol, travel unless necessary, my meds being a full-time job, you know) but nothing was going to stand in the way of me attending & enjoying her wedding. Because I push myself to do these things & be “on” for these types of weekends, which roll around more than you may think, I have to be mindful to take REAL GOOD care of myself before/during/after the fun and the events.

One of the main ways I stay on top of my health and prevent what I call “Lyme attacks” (anyone else with Lyme feel me on this?) from coming on is by maintaining a salt-oil-sugar-free plant-based diet.

Quickly before I get into that I’ll just tell you — a Lyme attack is no fun. I feel my Lyme symptoms about 99% of the time to begin with but they are basically livable especially because I am so used to them. Several days a week they flare up and keep me in bed, and once in a while I get a really bad attack that will knock me DOWN in a massive kind of way. It can be anything from such severe brain fog that I don’t even have a clue how to drive or speak or take care of Hudson / myself (it’s scary, I’m telling you) to more like crippling full body pain and what I call a “full body migraine.” You can imagine it. Another type of Lyme attack is severe nausea and/or severe insomnia. All of these things can make me feel truly batshit crazy, and miserable to the core. I try to avoid them at all costs.

Back to the diet!! The Whys, Hows & Huhs!

Ok I just want to chat again about why I am following a salt-oil-sugar-free plant-based diet and what it does for me. This seems to be a question I get upwards of 25x a day on Instagram so I wanted to address it again and give you a big update on how I feel!

I learned all about the lifestyle at True North Health Center where I stayed for nearly all of May doing a heavily supervised water fast for Lyme, fibroids, severe eczema, and other related health concerns. All of the doctors at True North advocate and live a salt-oil-sugar-free plant-based lifestyle for a variety of reasons. Some doctors I would highly recommend looking into to learn more about this topic are Dr. Goldhamer, Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. Klaper, and Dr. Neal Barnard.

The lifestyle can be followed for a variety of reasons that range from anti-inflammatory benefits, to anti-aging, to disease-fighting, to weight loss, and so much more, not to mention the cruelty-free aspects of veganism if you are passionate about that element on top of the health benefits.

I personally follow the diet to keep my Lyme symptoms at bay, reduce the severity and frequency of the Lyme attacks that I get, to keep my body mostly alkaline and eradicate the mold and parasites and other toxins that have built up over time, to keep my eczema and hives at bay, reduce my gut health issues (from SIBO to candida to the most severe IBS and bloat imaginable), and first and foremost… because it makes me feel the best I have felt in years.

(Cruelty-free is a huge added bonus!! I love animals so much it hurts, but I have ZERO judgment toward people who eat animal foods because I too have been there for my health and for many people eating animal foods is a necessity in order to be their healthiest.)

FAQ: What about beneficial elements of sodium, oils, and sugars?

A salt-oil-sugar-free plant-based diet is NOT 100% free from sodium, oils, and sugars. I get lots of sodium from natural plant foods and leafy greens, plenty of oils from nuts and seeds and other healthy fats, and plenty of naturally occurring sugars in fruits and starchy veggies. I would never advocate a sodium-free or oil-free diet *completely* (for most people at least) but when you are eating an abundance of healthy plant foods you are getting what you need in terms of nutrient breakdown.

I take PLENTY of supplements to manage all of the nutrient deficiencies I have from Lyme and co-infenctions. If I listed them all out here you’d freak because there are so many. Most of them are specific blends created by my Lyme doctor and they are keeping me in check, bringing my hormones back to balance, and getting my nutrient levels back to a stable place. I have a long way to go, but we are at least moving in the right direction.

An Update on How I Feel!

The last time I wrote about SOS-free I was on top of the world! It was late May, right after I left True North and just days before I was diagnosed with Lyme (although I was suffering from the symptoms all year!). I was feeling really good despite the chronic exhaustion from Lyme, and soon after I started my meds and treatments and started herxing (the Lyme-world term for “it gets worse before it gets better, because infections are being killed and toxins are building up in your body before you release them”). So now I continue to live the unfortunate herx life, but remaining SOS-free keeps my symptoms at bay.

One reason why I was feeling so good at that time was because my histamine markers went from a 1300 (WAY, WAY, WAY OFF THE CHARTS) to a 600 (still off the charts) during the water fast and the switch to SOS-free, but my doctor and I would still like to get them down to about a 30. But that number getting cut in HALF shows you how much the lifestyle has been helping me keep the inflammation in my body down compared to where it was, which is the hugest plus in the world to me.

My histamine levels are currently still around 600, and I am getting them re-tested in two weeks. I feel them when they rise and fall, and SADLY they rose way up I felt when I started drinking coffee again. I wanted to try to incorporate coffee into my life a few mornings a week but sadly I think my body is still too toxin-ridden to be able to enjoy it even in moderation just yet.

FAQ: Am I SOS-free 100% of the time?

I have definitely not been 100% rigid about the SOS-free diet, because a girl’s gotta live! I go to dinners with friends, to people’s houses for dinner, and even certain things I get from Erewhon (the organic grocery store by me) have trace amounts of salts or oils. I notice with complete certainty when I eat something that is not SOS-free. It either bothers my stomach, gives me a headache, makes my skin break out, or makes my joints ache. Or all of the above. It also usually makes me bloat beyond belief. So I TRY to keep it SOS-free to the best of my ability with little “treats” here and there.

I love the balance between being mostly all SOS-free plus also living my life. That piece is necessary. I cooked every meal at home from the end of May until mid July, and while I felt really good from the diet it can definitely get isolating. That is not something I want in my life so I try to find the best of both worlds. Luckily Erewhon and a few other places in LA have SOS-free options so I can go out and live and have the foods I love, while also avoiding the things that make me sick.

Drinking alcohol this weekend, albeit less than a full drink, definitely knocked me down. I felt so hungover on Saturday and my hangover only progressed throughout the day. My nausea was out of control and my brain fog was so bad that I made the terrible judgement call to leave for the airport with less than an hour to spare before our flight so we totally missed it!! I had to laugh (even though I was so frustrated I also cried…) because it was so clear to me that being out of my routine, drinking, staying out late, etc. caused my brain fog to jump from a 10 to a 100. (BTW my drink of choice was/always is a vodka soda with lime. And I had the best time with my lifelong best friends & my love soooo it was worth it, since it’s SUCH A RARITY for me.)

This week I am back on the SOS-free train and very hopeful about how it makes me feel. The people in my life have noticed a huge shift. I can’t go anywhere without people saying, “YOU LOOK AMAZING!” “YOU’RE GLOWING!” “You look better than you have in so long!” etc. which feels great, but also is a little tough because on the inside I still don’t feel great at all. But at least I have found a way of eating that works for me.

FAQ: Does being oil-free help with skin issues?

Being oil-free has definitely helped my skin clear up although I still have a long way to go with my skin thanks to the Lyme toxins. My rashes have gone way down on my body and although I do get some flareups, they are NOTHING like they were earlier this year before I started treatment and before I started eating this way.

FAQ: Does it help with bloat / swelling?

And I have noticed a significant reduction in bloat, facial swelling, puffy face / eyes, and everything along those lines since being SOS-free.

FAQ: Best part about it?

Probably the best part about the lifestyle is that I feel ridiculously good eating this way. My health is still totally blah but I know the immense difference between feeling blah AND having issues with the food I am eating, and feeling blah but on the right track with my food.

FAQ: Is it hard?

Honestly for me it is not hard at all, but maybe that’s because I know what it’s like to feel like complete SH*T from the inside out, and I try to avoid that feeling however I possibly can. When you’re sick as can be, lifestyle/dietary choices come from a place of necessity rather than a place of leisurely choice. When they come from that place of sheer NECESSITY, they really aren’t that hard. It’s what I’ve gotta do to maintain my health and live my life to the best of my ability right now.

FAQ: Good recipes?

Here is a fave that I shared on Instagram today… SOS-FREE COOKIE DOUGH!

COOKIE DOUGH RECIPE //
• 1 cup salt free garbanzo beans
• 1 cup salt free great northern beans
• 2 tbsp almond butter
• 2 tbsp cashew butter
• 2 tbsp tahini (you can use all the same nut / seed butter to make it easy but i like the variety)
• 2 tbsp yacon syrup
• 3 medjool dates (optional but they do make it sweeter!)
• 1 crushed sugar free chocolate bar (i used 3 squares of @addictivewellness!)
• blend thoroughly then add the chunks in after!
• SPOON IT, use it as a smoothie topping or a spread, or dip carrots / celery into it, so versatile! GIVE IT A TRY… so yummy

FAQ: Will I ever eat salt, oil, or sugar again?

I mean yes, of course. I envision myself sticking to SOS-free for a long time because I have a sensitive system and that’s not going anywhere. I also believe in the lifestyle wholeheartedly and MEGA encourage my family and friends to jump on board for their health as well. But another part of my life is that I love going out to dinners with friends, especially in the food MECCCCA of NYC where I am going for my bday this year and I look forward to indulging in some non-SOS-free deliciousness while I am there. Definitely some vegan ice cream and some Matthew Kenney restaurants are calling my name. I hope to be in a place within the next year or two where I can be a bit more lenient as my histamine levels continue to go down and my Lyme bugs continue to get killed.

FAQ: Is it the best diet for Lyme and co-infections?

I wouldn’t say that SOS-free vegan is right for everyone who has Lyme because every single case of Lyme is so different. I don’t know your deficiencies and intolerances or your co-infections… but for mine, this anti-inflammatory and alkaline lifestyle really works for me. Talk to your doctor before making any significant changes if you are really sick and if this is a big shift for you!

Hey my loves!

Over the years as I have started to share way more on Instagram and my podcast, I realize that not all of you have been here since my every-day-blogging days. That is a good thing because it means there are lots of newer eyeballs around here! And lots of longtime ones too… so if you’ve been here awhile comment below so I can thank you for your continued readership. And if you’re newer do the same so we can meet!

Anyway since there are lots of new readers around here I figured it was time to do a 10 things about me post. They’re always so fun and they bring me back to my MySpace and AIM days when we would do things like this all the time… I swear I was always a blogger at heart, decorating my AIM buddy profile with alternative fonts and colors for hours, living on the MySpace bulletin chats… oh man. If only I had had the wherewithal to start TBB back then. I DREAM of myself doing that actually, but I know everything happens for a reason so I’ve just gotta roll with how it all started anyway.

Ok let’s do this! Would love to hear more about you below because this blog is really more about our community than just about ME… so connecting with you guys is what keeps me going and makes this whole “writing into outer space” thing feel a lot more real.

10 Things About Me…!

1. Friendships have always played a huge role in my life. As far back as I can remember, I was begging my mom to have friends over after school and would stay up ALL NIGHT chatting with a girlfriend during a sleepover if we could get away with it. I mean literally at the age of six I was doing this — my mom has hilarious stories about waking up and finding us bouncing off the walls in the middle of the night, when we were so young we were still “BABIES” as she puts it.

Growing up as mostly an only child as my three siblings are many years older than me, my friends quickly became like my sisters. They would accompany us on family vacations, view my parents as their second mom & dad, and basically just be my absolute go-tos. Not a lot has changed over the years… I still have a lot of the same people in my life as I did when I was in kindergarten / middle school / high school.

As I have grown older, I have realized time and again that it’s not about having a million friends — it’s about having that small, tight knit group you can count on no matter what. This year in particular I have taken a good, hard look at who I surround myself with and made a huge effort to pour energy into the relationships that really, really matter. Those humans I can call rain or shine, who are there in my darkest days just as much as they are in the bright & exciting ones. I have recognized that when I am not pouring energy into those people and friendships I feel a little empty, like something is missing. It’s because they truly are like family to me so keeping them close is what feels so right in my heart. <3

AND YES some fellow bloggers are dear friends of mine, and they are REAL friends not just Instagram friends or friends for show, haha. We get that question all of the time. Some of my blogging besties / real life besties are Rachel Mansfield, Nicole Cogan, & Britt & Tara from Elevate the Globe to name a few.

2. I am from Northern California (Sacramento, baybayyyyy!!) and I moved to Los Angeles to go to college at Loyola Marymount University in 2009… coming up on ten years ago! At first I wasn’t sure that I even liked LA, and I had no plans to stay here after college. Right when I graduated I moved to NYC and lived there for a year studying creative writing at The New School, where I was getting my MFA. Somehow in the midst of all of that I realized I did want to live in LA, and I missed that sunny California life and my people here. I ended up moving back, and have lived in Brentwood for the last four years. Now I love LA and can’t imagine ever leaving… even though being bicoastal and spending half of my time in NYC has been a dream for a while! I even convinced my parents to get a place here, so that’s how you know I’m REALLY not going anywhere for a long while.

3. I am a creature of HABIT! I like to have the same routine every day, go back to the same vacation spots, go to the same yoga teachers at the same studios that I love, eat the same foods… so I have to constantly work to get myself out of my comfort zone. If there’s anything I’ve learned over time it’s that while routine is awesome and can be a very positive thing, it can also be limiting. Pushing myself to get out of the box has introduced some of my favorite things into my life, so I am always trying to find that balance between the two.

4. I stopped drinking alcohol a while ago and I feel amazing. I am going to do a whole post on this soon, but here’s the DL so far: I used to drink a LOT. I was never an alcoholic in any way, especially because I never even really liked alcohol. I just partied a lot in high school and in college. A few years ago I really lost the desire to drink, and slowly but surely choking down even a sip of alcohol felt nearly impossible to me. I just started to HATE it and my body would rebel by throwing up or getting extremely hungover from even very, very minimal alcohol. I drank a couple of times last year (at weddings and other occasions) and decided this year I would try a year of no alcohol.

I had a fewwww sips of a martini at my own engagement dinner just because I was so in the moment, but other than that I have been living the sober life all year. My health is at such a low right now that alcohol would really knock me off track so I don’t see myself reincorporating it any time soon, but I am never saying never. I do think life is about enjoyment and living in the moment so if the opportunity arises and I FEEL like it… a clean cocktail isn’t out of the question.

5. I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, mycotoxin illness (mold poisoning), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (a histamine disorder), the MTFHR gene, and tons of hormone imbalances and nutrient deficiencies this past June. Getting answers was a very welcome thing, but living with these chronic diseases and trying to find healing has been very taxing and painful. I am constantly going back and forth with how I feel. Some days I feel like superwoman powering through and riding adrenaline highs, and other days I feel like I have been hit by a freight train and can’t even move a single limb.

For someone who has put SUCH an emphasis on their health for so many years, it feels a bit like a betrayal from my own body. But I know that’s not the case and I also know that through all of the treatments I am doing and ALL of the inner spiritual work, I will heal. It is a true test of my patience and my sanity, but I am up for the challenge and I am determined to turn this into something good. Healing others is a huge passion of mine and in order to do that I must first heal myself.

6. I am obsessed with all things spiritual and ethereal. NUMBERS are a huge part of my life. 201 has been my number for almost 9 years now. I lived in 201 apartments for 8 years straight, and the number appears in my life every single day in one way or another. I believe it’s my angels and spirit guides guiding me in the right direction every time I see it… and so much more. It always shows me that I’m on the right track. I am also very into crystal healing, following the moon cycles and astrology, Human Design (listen to this podcast episode to learn more about HD!), shamanism, reiki, kundalini, meditation, and so much more. These spiritual practices have been a huge part of my healing journey, even far before I was diagnosed and finally knew what I had and what was making my health decline so intensely and rapidly.

My goal eventually is to be more consistent with my spiritual practice and develop my own healing art of sorts that I can share with the world… but I am taking my time on figuring it all out because I firmly believe my healing self will find ME when she is ready.

7. Yoga has been a huge part of my life since I was about 14. Since then I have embarked on trainings and retreats and transformative and immersive yoga experiences of all kinds. And the amazing thing is… I still have so much to learn. I will forever be a student of yoga. Yoga was my first love. I am a 5oo-hour trained RYT which surprises some people because I never decided to go the full-time teaching route, but you better believe I qualified myself for it just in case I ever want to. I love teaching events that infuse vinyasa with the more ethereal concepts of tuning into our bodies and our breath.

8. I have three nieces and a nephew, and because of my family being a little confusing to follow… people always think my nieces and nephew are my siblings, or sometimes they think they’re my kids. I am closer in age with my oldest nephew and niece than I am with any of my siblings! I love being an aunt — I became one when I was six. I always joke with my niece Isabella that I am the “crazy aunt” because I am so scatterbrained and she has been directing me around since she was little, lol! But she is truly one of my very best friends in the world and I don’t know what I would do without her. I feel so lucky to have such a close and loving family, even if we are not the “typical” nuclear family, if you will.

9. I met the love of my life, Jonathan, almost four years ago at my app launch party for The Balanced Blonde Recipe App (that no longer exists… but we had a good run!) and we became very good friends right off the bat. We were friends for a few years, he trained me for the LA Marathon, we worked out together a lot, and we even went on a few dinner “dates” that were “NOT DATES” (hahaha) until January 1st, 2017 when he finally kissed me and asked me to go on a real date with him. We always laugh looking back because he would say things like, “Let’s go to Gracias Madre for dinner and catch up… it’s not a date but just two friends catching up and talking about work.” LOL. I truly believe timing is everything and I am madly in love with the fact that we were friends first and foremost. He will always be my best friend, and how special is that?

10. I went to the teeniest, tiniest school from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The SAME school all the way through, for 13 years!!! It was wild at the time. I went through all of the emotions from LOVING IT to hating it by the time I was in high school and yearned for a “big school” experience that I imagined would be wayyyyy “cooler” and more fun. Now I am beyond grateful for my education and the creativity that was fostered at my school. Small liberal arts schools where kids are taught to be THEMSELVES and embrace all of their weirdness and quirkiness and uniqueness… they are everything. Now I am positive I will send my kids to the same type of school. I really don’t believe in the public school system but that is another conversation for another day.

11. OK I KNOW I AM ADDING AN EXTRA ONE BUT… I get this question a lot so I figured I would address it. I was vegan for many years and then I very publicly stopped being vegan, and wrote this book. For three and a half years after that I tried everything in the book, from keto to paleo to very very high fat and no carb to just fish and avocado and bone broth to everything else in between… and I have eventually made my way back to an entirely plant-based diet. I call it intuitively plant-based, and I love it. This is how my body thrives. Soon I will be doing a post about this, and the crazy ways my body has changed simply from the food I have fueled it with. Wild. I don’t believe in the labels that we put on ourselves and I may change and evolve again… but all I know is that plants make me feel REAL GOOOOD and I have so much to say and share about that.

Last and finally… writing is my passion. I am working on some big writing projects right now in the form of a few books and I am overjoyed to bring them to life. Stay tuned because this is where my heart is and I cannot wait to take you guys along for the ride.

Maintaining a “Normal” Schedule With Chronic Illness

Despite the title of this post, I believe it’s pretty much impossible to maintain a normal schedule with a chronic illness. For me at least, and I must add that in because everyone’s experience with illness is incredibly different. Especially Lyme! Lyme looks SO different on everyone.

Maybe it’s my super air sign (Libra-Aquarius-Libra), reflector (Human Design), head in the clouds personality coupled with being really sick, but between the two maintaining even a somewhat normal working schedule (and life schedule) has been something I have had to let go of.

I feel really lucky and grateful that I have a career that allows me to switch things up at the last minute when I need to, work from bed, work for myself, and say NO to whatever is not serving me, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy or that there isn’t a whole lot of stress on the backend because of all of the changes I have had to make.

I spent the first four years of my business saying YES to everything. Doing as much as I could. Speaking at every event I was asked to, hosting my own events, working with countless brands, going on brand trips, podcasting and blogging nearly every day of the week, collaborating with everyone I could, teaching yoga and leading retreats and collecting certifications by the month, and working on other projects like my TBB clothing line (which I have since shut down), my book, YouTube, and more.

When I think back to how many balls I had in the air, my first thought is: “What the heck, Jordan?! You taught yoga at the crack of dawn, worked on your clothing line / blog / podcast / Youtube / book / events / brand collabs / etc. When did you REST / hang out with people???” My second thought is: “No wonder I’m so sick now.”

In many ways I was predisposed to chronic illness because I have a very delicate system and various genetic mutations that make it all too easy for me to get sick, and all too difficult for me to detox… but in other ways, I know that stress triggered the Lyme & mold in my system to run rampant and knock me down with a vengeance this year.

And you know my outlook on that: as much as it sucks, it’s a gift. A gift from the universe to slow down and take a good, hard look at the way I am living my life so I can make the necessary changes to live BETTER & in a way that will make me thrive rather than make me sick.

There are so many things I want to do that are outside of the realm of all that I have been doing for the last five years. I truly see myself as an author first and foremost, and a poet, and someone who puts their family & friends first — not someone who puts work first which to be honest has been a part of building TBB up until this point.

But in order to be an author, poet, and a human who puts PEOPLE first… I have to carve out time for those things. And prioritize them. And shift my schedule and make the hard CHANGES that come along with shifting my focus. I am reading a book right now about morning routines (will do a full post on it ASAP) and it is inspiring the shit out of me to change the way I do things so I can create & manifest from a place of calm and FLOW.

But anyway… to the point of this post. MY SCHEDULE. How am I doing it? Let me walk you through…

How I am Maintaining My Schedule While Super Sick //

Well, the hardest part is simply NOT KNOWING how I will feel each and every day. I have good days where I can do a surprising amount and I feel more like the energizer bunny I have been all my life (no joke, that was my nickname for my entire childhood & adolescence!), and I have bad days where I can’t get out of bed to even walk to the kitchen to make food.

And a part of me knows that cramming a ton of stuff into my good days makes me crash a lot harder afterward, so as gratifying and fun as it feels in the moment to take advantage of feeling well, I also have to consistently remind myself not to do TOO much or the aftermath is truly, truly not worth it.

It has been a balancing act trying to use my energy wisely, rest when I need to (and even when I feel like I don’t need to), take advantage of those good days to be productive and do what I love and keep my business running smoothly, AND be okay with clearing my schedule and cancelling everything I wanted to do when my body simply says NOPE, not today.

IT’S HARD!! I always want to do everything and it is hard for me to accept and believe that right now I really just can’t. Not to mention, my already small windows of time to be active and do things because of how much I need to rest is totally cut in half because of the amount of time I spend in treatments, in doctor’s appointments, measuring out my supplements and tinctures and meds, and doing holistic treatments to manage my pain and discomfort.

It is a lot. I think anyone with a chronic illness can relate. And then there is the whole aspect of every time I see people they say things like, “YOU LOOK SO HEALTHY! YOU’RE ON THE UPSWING! I was worried last time I saw you because you looked a little pale but WOW I can tell you feel SO MUCH BETTER NOW!”

And YES that is nice to hear and it’s coming from a well meaning place, but all it does is make me feel more misunderstood and frustrated and sad because… I don’t feel well. I have the appearance of a healthy, super health-conscious, active 27 year old and the insides of a failing elderly person. At least when I had rashes all over my body it was an indictor to those around me that something was going on.

Now that the rashes are gone for the most part (thank goodness), all they can do is take my word for it. Or see for themselves that after 3pm most days I am bound to my bed and can barely greet Jonathan when he gets home from work.

Although structuring my days is a gamble because I frequently have to change them around at the last minute and I am STILL of the mentality that I can do way more than I actually can… I have found a routine that somewhat works for me for NOW that I will share below.

The Sched…

So as I mentioned, by 3pm ish every day I am down for the count. If I spend the early part of the day resting then I can manipulate that a little bit to have more energy in the later part of the day. But so far the way I am enjoying constructing my days is this…

7:30 – 9:30am: Wake up, spend time in bed cuddling Hud, meditate and reflect on my intentions for the day and my most important projects, putter to the kitchen to make coffee or matcha or mushroom coffee, make a smoothie or chia pudding, jump on my rebounder to get my lymphatic system moving, journal and plan out my day, stretch.

9:30 – Noon: Around this time or a bit later I turn my phone on (I sleep with it on airplane mode), post on Instagram and respond to text messages OR start writing for the blog or the book I am working on before checking these things because they start to distract me. If I am in a creative mood, I will keep writing undisturbed. If I am a little more frazzled or foggy, I use this time to respond to emails and get caught up with that side of the business.

If I have a podcast guest on this particular day, I try to have them come over between 11 & noon. This is peak energy time for me, as the breakfast/caffeine/energy is kicking in and I have a few good hours to feel like myself and feed off of other people’s energy and good vibes. I have an assistant take photos and videos during the interview so I don’t have to worry about that, and by the time the interview ends I am pretty much down for the count. Podcasting is a ton of energy but I so enjoy it, so it is worth it.

If I don’t have a podcast guest that day, I may record an intro & outro for a podcast episode that I have already recorded with a guest. That takes a similar amount of energy so doing it around 11 or noon is usually best for me.

Noon – 3pm: Some days I may be wiped out from a super productive morning, or other days I feel the energy flowing through me still so I keep working, head to a meeting or appointment, walk around my neighborhood to get some exercise, or most likely just keep writing. This part of the day is when I usually do photoshoots or take photos for my social media and the blog, because I still have energy but it doesn’t require quite as much brainpower as my morning tasks. Usually many more emails have rolled in by now, so I will check them again and try to clear them out so I feel good about signing off early in the evening.

3pm – 6pm: This is generally my time to stop working and shift my focus to something else. If I have been hard at work and super productive, I will take a break to read a book, lay down, call a friend, exercise / do yoga, go on a walk, hang with my mom (she just moved in upstairs!), or more often than not go to more appointments. This could be anything from ozone, to infrared sauna, to cryotherapy, to acupuncture and cupping, to a facial, to bodywork, to an appointment with my Lyme doctor, to blood tests, etc. I have appointments pretty much every other day and the timing isn’t usually my choice but if it is, I try to choose 3pm ish.

6pm – 8pm: In this window I try to stretch, do yoga, or go on a walk if I haven’t yet. Jonathan gets home around 6 so we’ll make dinner together or I will have already made something and eaten it (lol) because I eat as early as humanly possible. Sometimes I will meet a friend for dinner or have someone over to make dinner because J frequently works late and I love using this time to see people and spend time with my loves, and more often than not this includes an Erewhon date! By 8ish I am VERY wiped out and usually get in bed, read, watch Netflix, and cuddle and talk about our days with J. This is my favorite part of the day but also a very uncomfortable time if I am in a lot of pain from doing too much. Sometimes I wind down with a bath or meditation session.

AND THEN there are days like today where it’s 11:30am and I have not gotten out of bed. Or days like yesterday where 4pm rolled around and I was DOWN for the count… in bed.

Or other days like tomorrow where I have committed to teaching a special event at AloTHRIVE for Alo Yoga so I will be conserving my energy for that and can hopefully pull it together to wake up earlier than usual and get in the headspace for it.

Or even other types of days like events at night, birthday dinners, and other things I don’t want to miss so I have to plan accordingly.

I will say, being in Hawaii was awesome because I had an abundance of energy from the excitement of the engagement, from having NO stress, and from the purity of the air and so much time outside in nature and doing yoga at the glorious studio we found.

Things that GIVE ME ENERGY (or spoons, as I call it) are… time with Jonathan and Hud, yoga, being outside, going on walks / hikes, being at the beach, being with my BFF’s who I don’t have to try to be anyone or anything else around, and writing. It’s hard because sometimes the simple act of getting myself outside or to the beach seems IMPOSSIBLE when I feel so low… but I know it helps.

Having a supportive partner and also having my mom down here to help me makes this time in my life possible. For example, today my mom is my “photographer” and I have pushed back our shooting time first by a few days and again today by several hours. I wouldn’t be able to do that with a regular photographer but it is truly impossible for me to work in a normal fashion right now. And thank GOODNESS for Jonathan understanding when I have no spoons left and can’t even sit at the dinner table with him.

Also things like HAVING BOUNDARIES and hard no’s with things helps a ton. I don’t take brand phone calls or work phone calls. Point blank. Might sound crazy, but I do things all over email (except for the rare occasion when that isn’t possible) because I know that phone calls take way too much energy from me and I literally have to plan my day around them. I generally don’t go on other people’s podcasts or shows right now for the same reason — but occasionally I will do it if I feel like the experience will give me energy because it will be so fun / positive. I also limit my time with people who don’t know me inside and out, because it requires excess energy to be “on” in this situations. Those boundaries make a WORLD of difference.

It’s rough and something I know people don’t think about when they see a photo of me hiking the gorgeous Kauai trails or jumping up and down with glee & getting engaged. Those are parts of me too, and I AM SO GRATEFUL that I am able to have BOTH… the good days and the harder days. I didn’t have good days like I have lately until pretty recently so I am very very happy for them.

I just wanted to shed some light on it all for you guys because if you are in a similar position, you are not alone and you may find solace in structuring your day similar to the ways I have been. Or my biggest tip would be to find your own structure that works perfectly for YOU, and your own activities/things that add to your energy cup instead of draining it.

THE PROPOSAL STORY

Hi guys! WOW so much has happened since I last blogged. In a way it has been so nice to take a little hiatus from writing actual blog posts (which always means I turn my Instagram captions into full-blown mini blogs) because it gives me a whole new appreciation for this medium. The last time I posted was a little over exactly a month ago (what in the heck) which I think is the longest I have gone without writing a blog post since starting my blog five years ago.

I have needed the break for a few reasons. For one, my health issues and trying hard to maintain other aspects of the brand like my podcast and Insta while being so sick and taking on my healing as a full-time job. For two… WE GOT ENGAGED!!!!!!!!!!

Before I share the engagement story I want to quickly tell you what I am so thrilled about now that I have taken this blogging hiatus. I missed blogging a LOT and found myself constantly thinking about ideas for posts and even longing for the days where blogging was the place I expressed myself to you guys long before my podcast & using Instagram with such long form captions.

Because of that I have decided that for the month of September I am going to write a blog post EVERY DAY of the work week. So 5 days a week, you’ll be seeing a TBB post go live. OK NOW… The Proposal Story!! EEEEK!

Alright so let me take you back to almost two weeks ago: August 1st, 2018. The day began like any other, along with some wild happenings in the morning that made the day very memorable hours before Jonathan even proposed. We were leaving for Kauai the following day so we both had a ton to do and the stress level was running a little high. Jonathan had JUST gotten back from Australia so we were soaking up all the moments we could together after being apart for 10 days… and because of that I was able to convince J to snap some photos with me for a brand, pictured below. You can see the glee on his face knowing he would be proposing later in the afternoon!!!! And the total non-knowing-ness on my face, LOL.

Since we’ve very recently moved into our new building, we have spent a lot of time waiting on furniture deliveries and dealing with the chaos of building large furniture items, etc. That particular morning we were waiting on a few big West Elm deliveries before J left for work… and when the delivery men came in with our dresser / media console / bookshelf the door to our place was open for quite a while as they delivered and assembled it all.

I was in the bathroom getting ready for the day but assumed Jonathan was keeping an eye on Hudson. Huddy has a tendency to run out into the hallway to explore when the door is open, and he’s been loving the hallway in our new building even more than the last. So after the furniture was assembled and the delivery guys had left, J was about to run out the door to work and I was going to Alfred (for some matcha, of course) and the bank. Before we left I said, “Do you know where Huddy is?”

And J said no he didn’t, so we started looking in all of his usual spots just to be sure. After a few minutes of looking, it became clear that he wasn’t where he usually liked to hide/hang… so naturally I started to get a little frantic. Thinking about how long the door had been open and how much construction is going on in our building (meaning open doors all over the place, lots of people in and out, etc.) was starting to make me panic even more, so after a few more minutes of looking I was already freaking out in true Jordan fashion saying, “HE’S NOT IN HERE, WE NEED TO LOOK IN THE HALLWAYS!!!!”

So there I go sprinting through the halls of our building, then the staircases, then the parking garage, then the courtyard, SCREAMING Hudson’s name at the top of my lungs and starting to get absolutely hysterical. I kept running back into the apartment to look and Jonathan was going back and forth too… and after what felt like an hour but was probably a total of 20 minutes, J found Huddy shoved behind a bunch of boxes in a coat closet… SLEEPING. Totally unbothered by us.

But just to give you an idea of how the day started… FRANTIC would be an understatement. When we found him I collapsed onto the ground and sobbed. It felt like my worst nightmare coming true for a little while there. But if you have cats you know, if you’re being totally realistic with yourself, they run AWAY from the chaos not into it. LESSON LEARNED.

En Route to Malibu…

Now we joke about it looking back because Jonathan had the added pressure and fear of the fact that he was PROPOSING later that day, and if Hudson was indeed missing that would obviously ruin everything (not to mention ruin our lives but I think that was too much for him to even think about in the moment). I look back and think J is a SAINT for keeping himself so composed while I flipped and sobbed and screamed, all the while the proposal plan he’d been brewing for over a year was at stake.

But of course all was fine and WHEW for that!

ANYWAY Jonathan went to work for a few hours and I ran the errands then recorded intros & outros for the podcast. He was coming back to pick me up at 1pm for us to go spend the day in Malibu together working remotely & celebrating our 20th month anniversary. Something you should know about me & J is that we celebrate our anniversary every month, especially because we started dating on January 1st, 2017. So it makes it easy to celebrate/remember every time the first of the month rolls around.

He had told me the day before to bring a nice dress to change into because he’d made dinner reservations at Nobu, which I was thrilled about because we pretty much never dress up. Especially in the middle of the week. We are very much activewear during the day, Erewhon (aka grocery store) for dinner kind of people so picking out a nice dress to wear felt super romantic and exciting.

On the drive to Malibu I thought Jonathan seemed a little quiet, but he also seemed super happy and reflective so I didn’t think anything of it. We listened to some of our favorite songs, of course now songs I will NEVER forget (don’t worry I’m making a Spotify playlist of the songs ASAP!), and I mostly chatted while J listened. I got onto a huge tangent about the Hadid family who I now love so much after reading Yolanda’s book, and looking back now I crack up thinking about how in depth I talked about them all the while Jonathan was thinking, “You have nooooo idea what’s coming! Talk about the Hadid’s all you want but I am definitely barely listening.” LOL.

We sat down at Soho House, ordered lunch, and I got out my colored pencils & markers to make my intention setting list that I make on the first of every month. Looking back I felt like a lot of the people working were staring at me and smiling, and I figured it was because it’s not every day you see a 27 year old at Soho House decorating her notebook with extreme precision and using rainbow colored pens. It turns out they all knew what was coming & they were totally in on it!

I gave J a birthday letter I wrote him since he was in Australia on his birthday, and he made a big show of saying, “Awww I wish I had gotten you something!” as I kept assuring him it was a birthday card and nothing to do with our anniversary. But of course he loved that because he knew what was coming…! And you should know, the cards I write people are more like novels and MAJOR love letters so it was very mushy and heartfelt, which only made the day all the more special looking back.

A few minutes later Jonathan started asking me to go on a beach walk. I was surprised because we had JUST gotten there and hadn’t been sitting for that long, when our plan was to spend the day working at Soho House and then go out to dinner across the street when we were finished. Since we were leaving for Kauai the next day I had a ton of work I wanted to finish, and I figured he did too since he’s usually the VERY committed worker-bee while I am the far more lax one.

I showed him my to-do list thinking that would get him to understand why I wasn’t ready to go on a walk yet, but he persisted. I kept saying, “Not yet, I have so much to do and I really want to relax in Hawaii so I need to get this all done.”

But he kept bringing up the walk and said his body REALLY needed it… and since I had just finished writing my intentions and one of them was, “Get outside, WORK CAN WAIT,” and “Always put the people I love first, before work” I pretty much had no choice (lol) so I put my work aside and we walked down to the beach. But not before posting my intentions on Instagram and making a big deal about it, telling J to comment, in which he wrote, “YOU HAVE NO IDEA BABE!!!!”

Then we walked down to the beach to stroll and look for a place to lay out, even though I thought we were coming right back so I made a big deal out of telling the Soho House staff to keep my computer open. Typical blogger.

THE BEACH WALK…

Keep in mind it was VERY hot and I was wearing jeans and my black Pink Floyd t-shirt so I was baking. And I had my ozone treatment the day before so I was feeling very Lyme sick and fatigued. But it’s always nice to stroll on the Malibu beaches nonetheless so I was happy, and so happy to be with him after being apart for nearly two weeks. We walked one direction on the beach and Jonathan told me it was the first day of the 20th month of us dating… aka a 201. If you read this blog regularly, then you know that 201 is my lucky number. BEYOND lucky, it’s the number that follows me everywhere and is basically my sign from the universe that life is on track.

I couldn’t believe that he figured out it was a 201 day by thinking of it that way and I was overjoyed. So I proceeded to tell him that it was also August 1st, 2018 which was 8.01, 2018… which in many ways is a 108 which is another one of my numbers. He of course took that as an opportunity to make fun of me but he also loved it and I was secretly so thrilled that he was getting excited about numbers with me, since they are such a hugely important part of my life. He’s later told me he doesn’t remember ANYTHING we talked about on the beach because his heart was pounding so fast and he was so nervous about the ring box falling from where he had it wrapped in a towel…!!

Then we turned around and walked the other direction on the beach, and although it was very beautiful and I am VERY much in love with beach strolls… I was now extremely hot and the fatigue was creeping up on me. I kept telling J we should put our towels down and lay out, but he said we should keep walking until we found a prettier area to lay down. This didn’t seem strange to me at all because Jonathan is great at making sure every moment is beautiful and picturesque and lovely, while I am much more fly by the seat of my pants and all about immediate gratification… in this case the gratification of sitting down. But still in my head I was thinking, “He has no idea how sick I feel. It’s fine… I’ll take one for the team…”

We walked a little further and then laid our towels down in front of a house, and I was thrilled to be sitting. I took my shirt off but was stuck wearing my crazy hot jeans, wondering why on earth I always wear jeans on a hot day and shorts on a chilly day. I asked Jonathan for his hat to shield my face and he gave it to me, and we laid there for a little getting comfy in the sun. Looking back I do think he seemed extremely happy and extra sweet, but at the time I didn’t think anything of it. He is always sweet and I thought he was just glad to be on the beach.

Then he started saying some very sweet things, something along the lines of, “You calm me in a way no one else ever has, and I’ve known from the very first moment that you made me feel so calm that you were my forever girl. I was scared at first, but I always knew. You’ve always been the one for me, and I truly believe that we all have THE one for us.”

And I agreed!!! Jonathan and I are both words of affirmation people and say sweet things to each other pretty much all day long, so I still didn’t think a whole lot of it. I said something along the lines of, “I’m so glad I give you the gift of being calm, you so so deserve it more than anything.”

Then he said, “Can I give you a gift?” totally in the moment just responding to what I had said.

And to be honest you guys I was so confused I thought he was asking me if he gives me any gifts the way I give him the gift of calm. So I was opening my mouth to tell him how much he gives me on a daily basis when he said, “No, I have a gift for you…” and he pulled a little black box out of his shirt, which was folded up next to him on his towel.

He placed the box on my towel and I just stared at it, totally unaware of what was going on. My first thought was that he had gotten me a piece of jewelry in Australia, maybe a necklace or a bracelet like he’d gotten me the last time he was there. In my head I thought, “Oh Jonathan, he doesn’t realize this looks like a proposal and I’m going to open this box and it will be a necklace and I’ll have to act really excited even though it looked like a proposal…” but a proposal was SO FAR from my mind I really couldn’t fathom that’s what it would be.

I opened the box and inside was not a necklace or a bracelet but a DIAMOND RING GLISTENING IN THE SUN, colors bouncing off of it from all angles, and I STILL wasn’t sure if it was a proposal!!!!!

I looked at him, looked at the ring, felt the shock in my body rising, felt the excitement rising, still felt so confused, and said, “WAIT… IS THIS A JOKE?” (don’t ask me why I thought that but I totally did)

And he just kept laughing and saying it wasn’t a joke and “Why would I joke about this!??!”, so I kept saying, “IS THIS REAL? IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING???”

And he kept saying, “YES!” and then he knelt beside me and finally asked, “Will you marry me?” and I was so giddy and shocked and thrilled I basically tackled him to the ground on the sand and said, “YES!!!!”

I love that he asked and I love that I said yes but to be totally candid, words in that moment were not even necessary. Once I grasped what was going on, we just knew. We are spending the rest of our lives together. You just pulled off the greatest surprise of all time. Holy shit. Holy shit. Oh my god.

I couldn’t even process what was happening because the shock factor was through the roof. In one moment I was laying on a towel in the sand with my boyfriend, feeling very hot and exhausted and thinking about the work I still had to do, and in the next moment I was engaged and realized everything about this day had been planned for a very, very long time… that we weren’t just spending the day at Soho House to celebrate our anniversary but we were there because he was PROPOSING. I couldn’t get over the shock and thrill and excitement and all of the feelings of not knowing!

And then of course my mind darted to… “OMG, WE’RE GOING TO GET MARRIED!!!” And even though I have known for a long time that Jonathan would be the one I would spend the rest of my life with, and him with me, having it be so solidified was the most exciting thing I had ever felt in my entire life. All of the sudden marriage was not a fantasy but a reality, and I couldn’t even contain myself from overflowing with such deep, deep joy.

Not to mention the fact that I have been so sick, sicker than I ever have been in my life, unable to get out of bed most days or go on dates or exercise or do any of the things Jonathan and I both love, oftentimes too sick to even be intimate or get too close because my body is in pain and my herxheimer reactions from my treatments have been so intense. The fact that he proposed in the thick of all of this, when so many men would have fled from the terrifying reality of my chronic illness, that was not lost on me even in all of my shock and surprise.

It was just the medicine I needed to not only feel better but to be able to clearly envision my future and all of the beautiful things about it. Marrying Jonathan, having kids, having a happy and healthy and full life, when these last few months I have barely been able to see two feet in front of me. When he was in Australia and I was feeling sicker than ever, unable to go to two of my best friends’ Bachelor/Bachelorette parties and completely alone as everyone I knew and loved was out of town celebrating SOMETHING… I was in a dark place. In my journal entries, I wrote about how clearly I understand how people with chronic illness lose the will to live because we lose everything we love, right down to being able to even go outside.

Jonathan’s love for me at this time in my life has saved me, and is the deepest, truest, most remarkable medicine I could ever possibly feel. He has never once given up on me even for a second, and him proposing DURING this trying time means more to my heart than he may ever know.

And to be honest, the adrenaline and excitement from the proposal has carried me through for a week and a half. I have had some down moments, but mostly I have been full of a zest for life I haven’t felt in so long. And THAT medicine… that is everything.

I asked him over and over again “WHO IN OUR LIFE KNOWS!??!” before ultimately realizing that nearly EVERYONE knew except for me, and all of our family / friends are the best secret keepers of all time.

THE DINNER!

We stayed on the beach for about an hour and a half in all of our glee, FaceTimeing a few friends and leaping around with joy. We asked a few strangers to take a photo of us just to remember the moment but photos were the furthest thing from our minds. As far as I was concerned we were on another planet basking in our love, another universe, a magical place.

Then I still thought we were going to Nobu for dinner just the two of us, so we headed back to Soho House to change and clean up. After I changed into my dress Jonathan walked me into a back room where I thought we were grabbing our bags from earlier, and in the room was a group of our closest friends and family waiting for us!!! I just about passed out with excitement and thrill and shock all over again.

In the group was my mom and dad, Jonathan’s parents, Jonathan’s brother and sister in law, two of my very best friends (Jillian & Alexi) and then a few minutes later J’s best friend and his wife, and my sister and nieces and brother in law. It was PERFECT. Intimate and amazing, full of so much love, and really the only word I can use to describe it is magical.

My dad cried when we walked in which is a moment I will never forget, I was screaming “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE ALL HERE!!!!” and I just kept holding up my hand in the air for them all to see my ring… it wasn’t even a reality to me yet that I was wearing it! My mom told me today that it was the most elated she had ever seen me in her life, the MOST cloud nine happiness I have ever felt and radiated.

Sidenote, Jonathan picked out the ring entirely on his own. He had told me we’d go ring shopping together “after Hawaii” which is why I was so shocked about the timing. It never occurred to me he’d pick it out without my input, but I love that he did. It is so special to me that this is the ring that symbolizes our love to him. And it’s freaking perfect for me, my dream ring I never even knew I wanted until he gave it to me.

That entire night, I can honestly say, was the most special night of my life to date. Having our families and some of our closest friends there to celebrate this moment with us was just everything. They have been there as we’ve fallen in love and seen our relationship progress, and to be surrounded by their love and support was just absolutely everything.

THESE TWO!! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH IT HURTS!

Some of the highlights that night were surprising my niece Olivia & brother in law Jeff, as my sister & my other niece Isabella kept the engagement a secret from them so they were just as surprised as I was!!! Seeing Jeff’s face as he realized why they were there and that the engagement had JUST happened is a moment I will never, ever forget. Jeff is like a brother to me (he and my sister have been together since I was 5) and his thrill and approval meant everything and more.

We told the proposal story to everyone there at the same time which was super special, kind of like a toast, as Jonathan is super private and and hadn’t shared with anyone yet how exactly he was planning to propose. And the only people there who had already seen the ring were Alexi & J’s best friend Drew! I even had some champagne and a few sips of a martini… now you KNOW I was on cloud nine.

Soaking it all in with them was EVERYTHING, and thank goodness for them snapping so many amazing photos because I truly wouldn’t have done it on my own… I wasn’t even THINKING about pictures I was so, so high up on cloud 38293829.

Then the next day we left for Kauai which of course was all planned, as Jonathan had known for A YEAR AND A HALF that he would be proposing on August 1st, 2018. Because of the 201-ness of it (first day of our 20th month of dating). So when he planned our Hawaii trip, he knew we’d be going away to celebrate and soak in each other’s love when I simply assumed we were going on a summer vacation.

Kauai was A-FREAKIN-MAZING and I can’t wait to share all of that with you in another blog post coming this week.

The engagement truly was the highlight of my life thus far. It may sound crazy and I don’t think I knew it would be THAT special or put me in THAT great of spirits for as long as it did (and still has been!!!!!) but it was, and I believe that is a testament to our love and what an amazing human Jonathan is. He is my forever everything, my perfect boy.

With J’s family, my future in-laws, the most kind and loving and welcoming family in the world. <3

For the last week and a half he has “proposed” almost every night, putting the ring back on me whenever I’ve taken it off to shower/wash my face/do the dishes/etc. I am sure I won’t always do that but for now I have been because it’s so SPARKLY and perfect and I just want to keep it that way!!! Every time he gets down on one knee to do the fake proposal it makes us both laugh and fills me with he greatest joy. I pretend it’s THE time every time.

I share this here because I love so much taking you guys along for the ride of life with me. You’ve seen me through breakups, through some VERY unhealthy relationships, through debilitating illnesses and eating disorders and also great triumphs, and this is a new chapter. A chapter that I am over the moon about and then some.
