Quick Tip: Collagen Matcha Is My New Fave Thing

If you read my latest post about my functional medicine journey, then you know that I recently found out that I am ALLERGIC TO COFFEE!

Extremely sad for the girl who has been a diehard Bulletproof Coffee drinker for the last several years.

My heart sank when my tests came back and were off the charts red (meaning “Very, Very High” allergy) for coffee… but I have to say, I have made due without it quite well this past week!

Even harder than coffee has been eggs, almonds, and mushrooms… because the first two are in EVERYTHING and the third I am addicted to because of Four Sig’s Mushroom Coffee!

Anyway, I digress.

I am popping in tonight (before I fly to CABO for the rest of the week!) to share with you my favorite matcha recipe I have discovered from playing around with the matcha life for the last week.

Let’s do it!

BULLETPROOF MATCHA + COLLAGEN //

Ingredients:

1-2 tablespoons Matcha (I have been switching up my brand but right now using a Green Tea blend from Nuts.com)

1.5 cup hot water

1 tablespoon MCT oil

1 tablespoon coconut butter (or ghee)

1 scoop of Vital Proteins’ Dairy-Free Vanilla Collagen Creamer (it’s new and it’s AMAZING!)

Method:

Heat the water over the stove or in the microwave

Pour water, matcha, MCT, coconut butter or ghee, and the collagen creamer into a blender, blend it up, and enjoy!

I have been sipping on this SO MUCH lately and I am totally addicted!

Also, a few words about the collagen creamer… as you know, most coffee (or matcha, if you’re me!) creamers are chock full of unhealthy ingredients like added sugar, artificial ingredients, carrageenan, and hydrogenated vegetable oils. This one is full of natural ingredients with nothing weird at all.

All it has is organic coconut milk, collagen peptides, vanilla bean, and yummy spices like nutmeg, ginger, and clove.

Not only am I feeling a good zing of energy from my morning matcha, but I am also not feeling depleted later in the day or jittery at all like I had been with coffee lately… much to my dismay.

If a recent mammogram showed you have dense breast tissue, you may wonder what this means for your breast cancer risk. Doctors know dense breast tissue makes breast cancer screening more difficult and it may increase the risk of breast cancer.

In the United States, laws require doctors in some states to inform women when mammograms show they have dense breasts. But just what women should do in response isn't clear.

What is dense breast tissue?

Dense breast tissue refers to the appearance of breast tissue on a mammogram. It's a normal and common finding.

Breast tissue is composed of milk glands, milk ducts and supportive tissue (dense breast tissue), and fatty tissue (nondense breast tissue). When viewed on a mammogram, women with dense breasts have more dense tissue than fatty tissue.

The Latest In My Health & Functional Medicine Journey…!

Hey guys!

My last update on my health & functional medicine journey was in May, 2016! What?! I mean, crazy. A lot has happened since then.

To keep it short and sweet between then and now… I took all of those supplements, found quite a bit of balance, and then found myself in a rut again come January of this year. My hormones were still out of whack, I was feeling tired and fatigued all the time, and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out which foods exactly were still triggering my system like crazy and causing tons of gut issues.

Anyway, Dr. Lekkos and I have been working on getting my health back into balance for the last few years. This time around, we started investigating what was going on back in February, learned a lot more via a bunch of blood tests this summer, and two days ago uncovered a ton of what the real culprits have been all along.

My Imbalances & Allergies //

I want to preface this by saying, in the grand scheme of things… I am a healthy person. I want to send the universe so much gratitude for that, because things could be a LOT worse.

Functional Medicine is all about living optimally — finding the tweaks and taking the necessary steps to go from feeling “good” to feeling absolutely amazing. Since I am a wellness junkie and want to feel AMAZING all of the time and kick all of the little things going on with me that keep me from feeling that way… I am a huge proponent of functional medicine.

HORMONES:

Through extensive blood work Dr. Lekkos and I found out that I have an estrogen dominance, which means that my estrogen levels are high compared to my progesterone levels. This causes a painful menstrual cycle with migraines, cramps, heavy bleeding, and fatigue. It also causes hormonal breakouts on my skin, retention of water weight, etc. It’s not fun, and is the root a lot of the issues I experience overall.

I also have a low amount of testosterone, which could mean a whole host of things internally but mainly it means that I get tired easily, it is hard to put on muscle, and it can even cause a bit of depression.

Also my T3 levels in my thyroid were also a little low, so we decided to treat that with supplements to make sure it doesn’t slow down even more which would cause more of an issue.

VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES:

Beyond those hormonal imbalances, I am also extremely low in Vitamin D, Ferritin, and generally a few other vitamins and minerals that could be functioning at a higher level. Being low in those two vitamins can cause fatigue, breakouts, immunity issues, and gut problems.

ALLERGIES:

Finding out my latest allergies this week was a doozy. Not only am I allergic to literally my favorite things in the world… but having those things and surrounding myself with them has been compromising my immune system like crazy — causing exhaustion, gut health issues, water retention, skin problems, RASHES, stomach pain, and more.

As far as non-food-related allergies, I am off the charts allergic to every type of grass and almost every type of tree. I have known this my whole life but judging off of these tests it seems to be even worst now. When I say “off the charts” I mean that there are levels of red blocks that show you whether your allergy is High, Very High, or Very, Very High and mine for grass go BEYOND Very, Very High.

I am also allergic to… CAT DANDER. :((((!! You guys all know I have my cat, Hudson in my life who is the most important being to me on the entire planet. I had no idea that I was allergic to cat dander because it doesn’t show up for me in the usual ways like sneezing, itching and runny nose. For me, the allergy is more internal and it has been breaking down my immune system over time.

And then there’s food.

I knew gluten would light up off the charts red, but I didn’t realize that EVERY type of gluten-free grain would do the same. Quinoa, rice, millet, amaranth, buckwheat, gluten-free oats, corn, sesame… you name it, I am allergic to it. I was actually relieved to find this out because I KNOW I feel so much better when I stay off of grains entirely — but I didn’t realize it was because I had a full-blown allergy. #tbbgoesgrainfree is all too real!

Mushrooms are always off the charts for me, which is weird because I don’t really think I eat them that much but because of that I will make a conscious effort to avoid them!

And then there was COFFEE. OFF THE CHARTS RED. Really, really far off the charts. This was obviously devastating because I don’t think anyone is more obsessed with all things Bulletproof coffee, almond milk lattes, adaptogenic coffee, etc. than me. But it also makes sense because I have noticed that drinking coffee every day as I have for the last few years feels like it does inflame my gut and make me jittery/off so… the inkling I had about it was correct.

I will be replacing coffee with matcha in the mornings but I can safely say so far it’s NOT THE SAME. Any recommendations for what else you might do (besides Four Sigmatic because I already love their stuff to death) to replace would be much appreciated.

Another huge allergy that shocked and saddened me was ALMONDS. That one will be hard for me because not only do I love almonds, but I drink almond milk, eat almond butter, have all sorts of yummy deserts made with almonds / almond butter / almond flour / etc. all the time! I will have to make a conscious effort to notice when almonds are in something because I am so, so used to eating them! But I will happily replace with cashews, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts… mac nut milk, etc. There are a lot of other options thankfully!

Dairy didn’t even show up as an allergy because I haven’t eaten it in so long. When something is no longer in your system, it doesn’t show up on an allergy test. So that means gluten-free foods and even gluten snuck their way into my body sometime before this test.

Also random things like cranberries and all sorts of fruit were on the list but I already knew about those from previous testing. I won’t bore you with the nitty gritty details of apricots, plums, and beyond. hehe

GUT HEALTH:

So because of all of the allergies compromising my immune system and my gut, I have developed massive amounts of leaky gut. My stomach lining is not happy. And guess what? I ALSO HAVE A PARASITE.

Between eating all of these foods that have been breaking down my immune system, plus surrounding myself with things like the outdoors and cat dander (impossible not to on both accounts for me) — my gut has been a total mess.

So when I feel like crap a lot of the time and tell my family and friends that my stomach HURTS terribly… I’m not making that shit up. Leaky gut and food allergies + compromised immune system + mineral deficiencies + chronic fatigue = a lot of discomfort and exhaustion and pain.

What I’m Trying //

You might be surprised to hear that even though a lot of the things that showed up on my test were shocking and a bummer to me (cat dander, COFFEE, almonds…) I was thrilled to learn that I am feeling this way for a reason.

Anyone who deals with chronic stomach problems or chronic fatigue knows that when you get tests done and everything comes back normal AF, it’s sort of devastating. Because although yes you don’t have a serious disease which would be awful, there are also zero answers to the problems you’re dealing with which means you have to keep living with them.

So for me, if I can start making the necessary changes in my diet and lifestyle — taking my new supplements, cutting the foods I’m allergic to out of my diet, taking homeopathic tinctures to help me with the outdoor + cat dander allergies, replacing coffee with matcha and some other awesome options my doctor shared with me… then I think and hope I will start feeling a LOT better.

Today when the meds arrive I will start taking Tindamax to kill my parasite (#thankg0d), LDN to help with the allergies and immune system function, and progesterone to balance out my estrogen dominance. I am already on about 10 other supplements to keep my hormones and vitamin levels in balance, and so far I’ve noticed the supplements have been helping and doing their job.

MANIFESTING 101

hello, beautiful people!

i have been putting a lot of energy into something lately that you might not expect to hear… manifesting.

at first i was unsure whether to go about sharing exactly what i had manifested, as i know manifestation has a certain element of magic to it and when discussed openly it can sometimes loose it’s “oomph,” if you know what i mean.

but in my very TBB fashion i have decided, why the heck not? i want to share, so i’m going to!

manifestation is all about going with your gut so i may as well keep going with mine.

in this post i will be sharing the top three “WOAH” manifestation moments i’ve experienced over the last few months… then i will share with you the top three tips i go to when i am working on manifesting. ready?! let’s do it.

P.S. one big thing to remember about manifesting is that the actuality of what you’re manifesting might look different than how you picture it. for example… if you’re manifesting a house, don’t focus on the money to buy a house, but rather focus on the HOUSE. because you never know how you will get it, it could be gifted to you! one small example.

as you’ll see… my examples are like that too. different than what i’d envisioned, but still oh so magical!

OKAY now i’m ready!

A FEW BIG MANIFESTATIONS…

( some of this, you won’t even believe! it’s NUTS! )

1. writing a movie // a few months ago i went to a kundalini class with my best friend jill, taught by Tej at Nine Treasures of course. at the end of the class, in savasana, i had an unusually aware sense of what was to come. i felt super tapped in to new creative ideas and overwhelmed with the vision that i was going to write a movie! i could see the whole thing playing out… the table in which i’d be sitting when i pitched the movie to directors, some of the actors that would be in it (ahh!) and even that i would be collaborating with a male co-writer.

we left the class and i told jill: “i’m going to write movie. i saw the whole thing. and i am going to collaborate with someone who reminds me of [our friend] jonah but it’s not going to be him exactly. it’s going to do super well and i am not even sure what it will be about yet.”

she laughed, and so did i, considering that screenwriting isn’t really my current life path. but who knows?! when you like to write, you like to write. we also took it in as something that could be a legit possibility — i was THAT sure of it.

fast forward about 48 hours. i was in santa cruz with my family for my dad’s birthday, and while checking my phone late one night i receive an email titled “screenwriting inquiry.” WHAT?!

i open it… it’s from a director asking me whether i would be interested in screenwriting for him and adapting his short film into a feature film.

of course i immediately said i would meet with him, and when we sat down, he was identical (in personality and appearance) to our friend jonah… even more reason for me to think, WHAT THE ACTUAL…

he had found my writing through instagram, which lead him to my blog, which lead him to explain to me that the themes i write about are very much a part of his movie vision.

we had a lot of back and forth about the potential screenwriting partnership, and even though i initially said “YES!” (#whoops) i mulled it over and realized that even though it WAS the result of a true manifestation and visioning process, that didn’t necessarily mean it was the right movie at the right point in time for me to sign onto.

(that’s a long story short — there was way more that went into my eventually deciding not to do it.)

what it DID do was show me that manifesting is insanely real.

it also showed me that if i want to be a screenwriter, i sure as hell can.

and if i want to commit to something new on this amazing journey of life, there’s nothing stopping me.

it also introduced me to an awesome new mentor and opened the doors for me to see, okay…. if i want something, all i need to do is give it some real energy and love, and meditate on it (in kundalini, for extra good juju!).

2. having a very certain yogi celeb on my podcast // this is a short and sweet story about a fab yogi singer who you’ll soon find on my podcast (probably not until Jan or Feb) — someone who’s music I LOVE and jam out to all the time. (not trevor hall, you’ll see why in a sec! someone else!). i told jonathan i’d die to have him on my podcast and we decided that i would manifest it for 2018. literally 24 hours later i had an email in my inbox from his publicist inquiring about him being a podcast guest. fate? i think yes. manifestation? hell yeah.

3. speaking of yogi singing celebs…. // i had another guest in mind, mr. trevor hall (the human who sings ALL of my favorite songs. all of them.) and decided this past weekend that i would hardcore manifest having him on the podcast also. or at LEAST manifest talking to him / meeting him / anything with him!

well, wouldn’t you know it, i called my amazing astrologer debra silverman this morning and would you guess who she was with? TREVOR HALL. she put me on speaker phone so i could tell him how much he inspires me, and i may have sorta kinda convinced him and debra to come on the podcast TOGETHER! so there’s that.

it was nuts. i was on a giddy high for the rest of the day thinking, manifesting is really that easy? what?!

but the truth is — it’s not easy. i dedicate most of my life to being in alignment with what works for me, the dreams i want to bring to life, and more. and now that i am finally at this point of living in the FLOW, manifesting feels simple and living out of alignment just… doesn’t!

those are three of my most specific manifestation stories, but the list goes on. i manifested my current relationship with J, i manifested my spirit juice newsletter, i manifested my podcast, and even tons of specific work opportunities that i am currently engaged in. i’ve also been manifesting finding the perfect shamanic and astrology programs… and slowly but surely, i’ve been finding them.

manifesting is HUGE and it’s becoming a total cornerstone of my life.

all it really requires is tapping in.

my top three manifesting tips:

1. feel the emotion of what it is that you want before you have it, and it will be more attracted to you. for example, if you are manifesting romantic love — TAP IN to what it might feel like to have that lifelong partner you are wanting to attract. carry yourself with the high vibes of having that partner already in your life. once you carry yourself with that confidence and spring in your step, you’ll attract the high vibrational partner you are looking for. if you act down in the dumps and depressed when you’re out and about because that person isn’t in your life yet — you won’t be giving off the most attractive vibes, which you already know!

2. WRITE THEM DOWN! don’t underestimate the power of writing things down in order to bring them to life. writing them down not only cements them as messages to the universe of what you want, but also cements them in your own mind as goals and intentions to work toward!

3. don’t get tripped up on what the outcome looks like, just accept it and show the universe GRATITUDE! did i envision that my getting in touch with trevor hall would come through my amazing astrologer who happened to be hanging out with him today? no! was it equally amazing? yes! did i envision that the movie i was imagining i would write would actually come in the form of an offer i would end up saying no to? no, but it still showed me how powerful manifestation is — and showed me that writing a movie is definitely in my upcoming wheelhouse. just because it wasn’t the right situation doesn’t mean i will never write a movie, and instead i thanked the universe for showing me what was up.

i could go on and on (and i will… think NEXT BOOK vibes) but this is a little overview of what i have been up to lately and how exciting all of this stuff is to me. manifesting is theeee coolest thing ever and i am so excited to share away with you guys as i continue to learn!

Is the free healthcare system in Canada ineffective?

I live in Canada.. The biggest misconception is that Canada has long wait times for life threatening events. This is not true at all. For most elective surgeries such as arthroscopy on your knee or even a full knee replacement etc., you will wait. If you are diagnosed with cancer and need surgery tomorrow, you will get it. If we are under age 65 we still pay for prescription drugs but rules differ by province.

Health care costs per capita in the US are more than 50% higher than anywhere else in the world (according to WHO). From my perspective, I blame insurance companies and the litigation lawyers that defend them for the high costs. An American citizen who needs a knee replacement, for example, can fly to Panama stay in a state of the art hospital run by USA trained doctors and pay less than half for their surgery.

The real problem the US has to grapple with is not how to give universal health care but how to deal with the blow to the economy from the removal of 300+ million health insurance policies and a bunch of unemployed lawyers.

Sometime, somewhere, somehow, someone will have to rip the band aid off.

Last year, a 77-year-old woman traveled to a clinic in Georgia to have stem cells injected in her eyes. She came in hope of a cure—or at least something that could help her macular degeneration, which causes a dark spot to appear in the center of vision.

The procedure was supposed to work like this: The clinic would take fat from her belly, separate out stem cells that naturally occur in fat, and inject them into her eyes to regenerate damaged tissue. The procedure cost $8,900. It had not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and was not covered by insurance. To pay out of pocket, she had to raise money on a crowdfunding site.

Her vision did not get better. It got much worse. Within three months, her retinas—the eye’s layer of light-sensitive cells—had peeled away from the rest of her eyes. As a result, she can only make out hand motions in her right eye and light in the left, according to a recent case report. She could no longer walk on her own.

In March, eye doctors based primarily at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami had published a widely covered report describing three eerily similar cases: Three elderly women with macular degeneration got stem cells derived from their own fat injected into their eyes at a different stem-cell clinic in Florida. The same thing happened: Their retinas became detached, and they went blind. The doctors ended up examining the 77-year-old woman too, which led to the recent case report describing her condition.

And there are likely even more cases. Since writing the first report, says Ajay Kuriyan, an author on the report and now a retinal specialist at the University of Rochester, eye doctors around the country have come forward with similar stories of stem-cell injections gone awry. They are now preparing an article describing the additional cases.

“It’s just not a professional thing to take an unproven intervention and inject it in both eyes.”

A precautionary note:

1. No competent ophthalmologist treats both eyes simultaneously, even with approved treatments.
2. All credible treatments have been studied with a verifiable, repeatable study approved by the FDA.

Always ask the treating physician for scientific peer reviewed articles.
Always ask for a written consent form. It should list all possible side effects and complications. This is an accepted standard of care. Absent this document the provider is guilty of malpractice, and it would be indefensible in court.

Always ask your physician for a referral to a local ophthalmologist, (BOARD CERTIFIED) for his opinion.

The FDA has drafted guidelines on how to oversee stem-cell clinics. The agency says stem cells do not have to be regulated as drugs as long as clinics follow certain standards, like if they only minimally manipulate the cells and don’t change their purpose in the body. For example, transferring fat from the belly to breasts would not fall under FDA purview because the fat is still acting as fat. But if stem cells are being separated from fat and then injected to treat a disease, then the FDA may have reason to step in.

Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not.

Stem cell treatments are successful for specific disease. It is not a generic or 'miracle' panacea.
